My visit to the land of my ancestors

Being from an Indian origin I had never been to my native place Punjab. My grand parents had come to Canada many decades back and we had all been born and brought up there. It was my kids who once insisted they wanted to visit India. So we decided to spend our yearly vacation in India.

We flew down to Delhi and chose one of the best Delhi hotels, to stay. Our welcome to the country in the Delhi hotels was good. Incidentally the Indian cricket team was also putting up there and my children went crazy. From Delhi we went Amritsar the city of my ancestors. It was exciting to see the Golden temple there. My kids were new to the culture there but they enjoyed their time. We put up at one of the Amritsar hotels. What we found peculiar about Amritsar hotels was that people there hardly spoke in any other language but Punjabi and their Punjabi was different from the one we spoke at home sometimes.

My kids wanted to go and visit some other places in India too. So we decided to go to Goa first. We reached Goa and then went to a couple of Goa hotels and finally stayed at one of them. Kids became very fond of the sea food at the Goa Hotels. After Goa we went to Pune to meet one of my father’s very good friends. We had booked a Pune hotel but our uncle insisted that we stay with them. So we had to cancel our reservation at the Pune hotel. Now only thing left for us to see was a hill station so we chose Munnar. We had heard a lot about Kerela through some of our friends. Our experience at the Munnar hotel was not very good due to their rude behavior. The Munnar hotel however was located at a very picturesque location and we tried our hand at photography there.

While we were returning from Munnar we had a critical situation. Since all direct flights to Delhi were booked so we decided to take a flight through Kolkata. Infact we had to put up in Kolkata hotel and took a connecting flight to Delhi from there the next day. But our stay at Kolkata hotel was good. The city was strange and cramped but I enjoyed the fish there.

Our stay in India was truly memorable. It made us connect with our roots.
